Collection Facts

Calculators
Books 100,000 plus volumes with subject strengths in art, music, history, science and literature. Search the online library catalog. Periodicals Over 950 subscriptions to newspapers, magazines, and journals. Thousands of periodical abstracts and articles available through online periodical databases. Students may borrow laptop computers at the Academic Technology Lab for use within the Library building for up to 4 hours
from the (x2657).Disks may be purchased in the Academic Technology Lab (x2657) vending machine on the Library 1st floor for $1.00, or in the Campus Bookstore (x2682)

The Library has numerous Internet resources to assist in the research process. Internet accessible computers are located in the Academic Research Lab next to the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor, as well as in the Academic Technology Lab on the 1st floor. All these resources also may be accessed using a wireless Internet connection within the Library building, or from Internet-connected computer outside of the Library. These resources include:

The Bookstore has a fax for student use. The cost is $0.50 per page.

NOTE: Payments for lab materials that are housed in labs (e.g., clay for Art, pattern paper for Fashion, etc.) may need to be made at the Cashier Office. See your instructor for details.
Instructor ReservesInstructor Reserves are course materials (books, articles, videos, etc.) set
aside by instructors for reserved student use. Reserves are shelved by
course title and kept behind the Circulation Desk (San Marcos campus).
Reserves at the Escondido Center Library may be found at the public services
desk. Check the
Library Catalog for the specific location. Legal Program Reserve is located
on the third floor at the end of the general collection at San Marcos.
Instructors wishing to place items on reserve may
fill out this form and bring the materials to the Circulation Desk (San
Marcos) or public services desk (Escondido Center Library).
If the library does not own the books or articles you need, it may be possible to get them from another library. To request books use our online request form or for periodicals/journals use this form. Interlibrary request forms are also available at San Marcos from the Reference and Circulation Desks, and at the Escondido Center Library.
MapsThe Library's collection of maps and atlases are located near the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor. Local and regional street maps and guides are also available at the Reference Desk. .

Media ResourcesThe Library's non-print media holdings include DVDs, music CDs, CD-ROMs, audio- and video-cassettes, microscopes, and even a skeleton. Most media (including items for ETV courses and Instructor Reserves) is housed at or near the Circulation Desk on the 2nd floor of the Library building. Televisions and VCR, DVD, audio CD and cassette players are available in the same location (headphones can be checked-out from the Library or you may use your own). Equipment for classroom use may be obtained through the Audio Visual Department. Media not in the library collection may be reserved by instructors through the Library's Media Booking service.
The Library subscribes to several daily and weekly newspapers. Current issues may be found in the Library's Current Periodicals Reading Area and back issues are on the Periodicals shelves or on microfilm. All are located on the 2nd Floor. Additionally, newspaper articles from hundreds of publications are available over the Internet through several online databases or newspaper websites. Newspapers may not be checked out of the Library, but photocopies of articles may be made.
Daily issues of the North County Times and San Diego Union Tribune can be purchased from coin operated news stands located at the front entrance to the Campus Administration building (near the Cashier Office and Human Resource Services). Vendors also sell copies on West Mission Rd. in front of the campus.
Notaries are available on campus by appointment only; there may be a charge for this service. Contact the people below for information, including types of documents they will notarize and cost, and to schedule an appointment (walk-in service is not available).

A selection of pamphlets and newspaper clippings on various subjects are arranged alphabetically in the filing cabinets located adjacent to the Reference Desk.
Staff and visitors to the San Marcos Library may park in Staff/Visitor Lot #4 next to the Library with a current and valid permit. Student parking is available across from the Library off of Comet Circle. See Campus Map for details.
Visitor permits are available from Campus Police or in self-service machines located in some parking lots. See Parking information for details.
Students may purchase parking permits at the Cashier Office, x2114 or PIC Center, 1st floor Student Union next to elevators, x2796. During the first weeks of each semester, students may also purchase permits in SU-202 (2nd floor Student Union).
Parking tickets for violations must be paid at the Cashier Office.
Palomar College faculty and staff may use their current and valid Palomar College parking permits to park at Mira Costa College (MCC) campuses; Palomar students must obtain an MCC permit to park there.

Attached to the microfilm readers in the Library Reference area; copies are 10 cents/page and the reader/printers accept only dimes.

These rare and often irreplaceable books do not circulate. Located in the Rare Book Room on the second floor, these materials must be requested at the Main Circulation Desk.
